What Causes the Winter Blues & How to Treat Them?

Winter depression... also known as Seasonal Affective Disorder or SAD... sucks!

It can actually occur at any point of the year, but the cold, dark winter months regularly are met up with a rise in depression symptoms.  Some signs and symptoms which will indicate you are suffering from depression include marked changes in sleeping patterns or appetite, a general feeling of hopelessness, an incapability to regulate negative feelings, difficulty concentrating and an abnormally short temper.

If you find symptoms like these affect you particularly when the days are shorter, you probably have seasonal affective disorder ( SAD ).

Fortunately , many of your SAD symptoms can be improved or conquered using simple light therapy.

Light therapy for depression is a strategy that was developed to combat downcast symptoms as lately as the early 1980s.  Until that time, the medical world did not embrace the possibility that changes in seasonal light exposure affected humans in a similar fashion to other species.

In 1981 the first patient treated with light treatment suffered exposure to four additional hours of light a day, two in the morning and 2 in the evening.  When the treatment was successful, the disorder was labeled as seasonal affective disorder and since then sufferers have started to use light care as the first treatment for this disorder.

While your health practitioner can help you decide if and how much light therapy for depression is right for you, meanwhile consider what a patient of this therapy can expect.  Often treatment starts in the early fall, when the days are just starting to become shorter.  Each light box has different exposure levels, so your doctor can help you decide how long each session should be.  The standard patient will start with 15 minute daily sessions, and work his or her way up to as much as two hours of treatment a day.

The secret to successful treatment is consistency.  Set aside time every day to complete your session.  Skipping sessions may make the treatment less effective.

What can patients hope to achieve?

When using light therapy for depression, a patient can expect many good results.  While your sad will not fix your condition, you will enjoy noticeable improvements in your symptoms.  Your energy levels will increase and you may have a rather more positive outlook on life.  Work with your physician to find the light box that is suitable for you, do not forget to use it consistently, don't skip treatments or stop them too shortly, and always stick to your GP's other treatment tenets.  With light therapy treatment a brighter day can end up in a lighter day.

Depression is very prevalent in our culture. Having a natural option for treatment is great. There are so many adverse side effects with pharmaceutical treatments. Thanks for the information.

Lots of good new stuff for me to think about! Light boxes I never knew about. Sun lamps yes, but I never saw one with a protective screen like that, and I really didn't consider full spectrum bulbs to be so therapeutic til now.
